About Programme

Based on the Ben Graham or Warren Buffett approach to allocating capital, this exclusive value investing program will teach the frameworks and processes of investing that some of the most successful investors in the world employ to manage and preserve capital.

What is Value Investing?

Value investing focuses on the economic analysis and the valuation of the business operations of the firm with the aim of obtaining an estimate of its fundamental value. It calls to invest in the firm if the fundamental value is sufficiently above the market value so that there is a margin of safety to protect the investor against unforeseen contingencies. The approach is integrated, with the economic analysis of the business operations of the firm, and the valuation of those business operations inform and support each other. In this way, the value investor obtains a coherent view of the firm.

With unmatched access to Wall Street, renowned finance and accounting divisions, and the Heilbrunn Center for Graham and Dodd Investing resources, Columbia Business School is the only school to offer this unparalleled program in value investing. Led by David Horn, adjunct associate professor of business, Finance Division, an acclaimed finance professor with a deep understanding of the intricacies of value investing and financial markets, this investment program is designed to provide participants with a solid foundation in value investing principles and the ability to apply these principles to real-world investment scenarios.

Programme Content

The Value Investing program familiarizes you with the principles and techniques of value investing through a combination of formal lectures and in-class valuation discussions.

Hands-On Tools and Exercises

Successful value investors draw on a wide range of concepts to guide their investment process. Throughout the program, participants build a practical toolkit and decision-making framework that can be applied immediately to personal investing or professional investment analysis. Participants explore search techniques, the steps involved in evaluating potential investments, methods for conducting rigorous research, and approaches for maintaining disciplined decision-making across market cycles.

Through a series of case studies and simulations, participants analyze prominent companies, including Apple and Nike, to identify sources of long-term value. They also examine an underperforming utility company to evaluate the factors behind its performance and assess its potential for recovery. The program concludes with a trading simulation that challenges participants to make investment decisions in response to breaking market news.
