About Programme

Internet of Things (IoT) is a technology that connects everyday physical devices such as sensors, appliances, vehicles, and machines to the internet, enabling them to collect, share, and process data automatically. IoT plays a key role in modern technology and is widely used in smart homes, smart cities, industrial automation (Industry 4.0), healthcare systems, environmental monitoring, and many other applications. As industries increasingly adopt connected and intelligent systems, understanding IoT technologies has become an essential skill for engineering students, researchers, and professionals. This 5-day hands-on workshop is designed to provide participants with both theoretical knowledge and practical experience in IoT. Starting from the basic concepts, participants will learn to design, develop, and implement IoT-based applications and working prototypes. By the end of the workshop, participants will have gained the skills and confidence needed to pursue advanced academic projects, research activities, or industry-oriented IoT applications.

Programme Content

Day 1: Introduction to IoT, getting started with the required tool-chains and a guided exercise on basic IoT connectivity; Day 2: Basic sensor integration, introduction to HTTP, implementing HTTP client and server configurations for standard web-based data retrieval and service provisioning; Day 3: Introduction to MQTT, deploying MQTT, the industry-standard publish-subscribe messaging protocol optimized for lightweight, low-bandwidth machine-to-machine (M2M) communication, and funneling live sensor data into centralized IoT Cloud Dashboards to execute real-time data visualization, analytics, and remote device management; Day 4: Introduction to BLE and LoRa, utilizing BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) for short-range, power-efficient peripheral interfacing, alongside LoRa (Long Range) for low-power, wide-area network (LPWAN) telemetry; Day 5: Mini project on full-Stack heterogeneous integration to combine these discrete protocols into a unified, functional ecosystem capable of transmitting edge data to cloud endpoints

Programme Benefits

HANDS ON FACILITY:
This workshop will be conducted at the WEL at Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Bombay. WEL is one of the largest and most advanced teaching and research laboratories at IIT Bombay. The laboratory is managed by a highly experienced faculty team, supported by dedicated technical staff and M.Tech. Research Assistants (RAs). Every year, WEL serves more than 1,700 IIT Bombay students through laboratory courses and approximately 600 students from engineering institutions across India through its outreach and skill development programs. The laboratory has developed several in-house hardware kits that are extensively used in its courses and training programs. WEL is equipped with state-of-the-art electronic test and measurement instruments, including oscilloscopes, function generators, programmable power supplies, digital multimeters, spectrum analyzers, precision LCR meters, impedance analyzers, and mixed-signal oscilloscopes (MSOs). The laboratory also houses a wide range of commercial and in-house developed FPGA and microcontroller development platforms.
