Mergers and Acquisitions Strategy

Mergers and acquisitions are deemed to be amongst the most dramatic events in a firm’s history. The forces of globalization, emergence of economic unions like EU, maturing markets and intense competition have resulted in waves of M&A encompassing economies around the world. With the roll out of liberalization policies in hitherto closed economies in the 1990s, an increasing number of firms from these markets have shown interest in acquiring firms in developed and other emerging economies. The result of the exogenous shock introduced by the liberalization process adopted in different emerging economies has thus been to set off a series of restructuring responses in different industries across nations that have resulted in the latest merger wave characterized by an unprecedented number of acquisitions undertaken by firms originating in emerging economies.

This programme intends to expose the participants to the different aspects of the merger and acquisition process in sufficient detail to enable them to take informed decisions relating to growth strategies of firms through M&A. The strategic, financial, human and legal aspects of M&A are given prominence in this programme. This is expected to enable executives to undertake effective strategies to gain and build sustainable competitive advantage for their organizations through a better analysis of the deals that may be taken up as well as during execution of the integration of the acquired firm.

It employs an integrative approach emphasizing analysis of real life situations through the case method approach to provide an in-depth understanding of current understanding of strategic leadership to achieve managerial excellence. The programme will use lectures/ full length cases. Faculty will lead the discussion on these cases. Compulsory residential stay is required to prepare the cases assigned for the sessions unless COVID situation warrants otherwise.

The course is designed for middle or senior level executives who are currently responsible (or, likely to assume responsibility) for the growth strategy of their firm through M&A.
