The Ultimate Manager Bootcamp

New and less experienced managers are often given high-level tasks with little to no onboarding. In this 10-day program, Schulich ExecEd’s veteran instructors deliver expert perspectives on what managers need to know today.

Navigate the fundamentals of business management and the formal processes of core management skills, including marketing, business planning, financial management, and performance evaluation. Lead your team to success with proven training theories that have stood the test of time.

For mid-career and senior leaders who already know the gains and pains of managing teams, this program offers fresh perspectives from top instructors on the kinds of dynamic leadership that propel today’s intricate work environments.

This Masters Certificate comprises two stand-alone five-day programs, which can also be taken separately: Management 1: New Managers Course and Management 2: The Advanced Managers Course . Take the full Masters Certificate for a comprehensive understanding of management essentials and best practices.

To supplement in-class instruction, participants will apply program learnings and insights to coursework and readings outside the classroom.

Programme Content

Management 1: The New Managers Course

Take this module alone, or as part of the full Masters Certificate in Management program.

Day 1: The New Manager Roadmap

This session will address how different (and sometimes difficult) it is to shift from a specialist to a manager’s state of mind. Explore your level of readiness as well as the implications of that readiness for you, your team and your company.

Day 2: Performance Management

This session covers the main aspects of managing team and individual performance. Start by setting SMART goals for your team members and communicating, then move on to the key aspects of task and project delegation. Estimate the right level of delegation. Enable growth and giving and receiving feedback.

Day 3: Critical and Innovative Management

Gain the tools to be a creative and innovative manager who contributes to your organization’s growth and development. Dive into key critical thinking topics like data literacy and evidence-based decision-making. Finish the session by exploring creative self-awareness and brainstorming techniques.

Day 4: Organizational Strategy

A new manager should look at the big picture of their organization while still recognizing the smaller components that make the picture what it is. In this session, gain the tools to analyze your environment and determine where your department goals fit into the organization’s overall strategy–the big picture. Finally, learn to identify where collaboration with other departments is needed and how to facilitate that collaboration.

Day 5: Financial Management

This session is designed to strengthen your grasp of the key financial planning and reporting processes. Learn to maintain financial responsibility for the profitability and cost control of the business unit(s) you are responsible for. Tie up the program by mastering budgeting procedures for management success.

Management 2: The Advanced Management Course

Take this module alone, or as part of the full Masters Certificate in Management program.

Day 1: From Manager to Leader

Kickstart the program with an exploration of diverse leadership styles, identify your own and assess their impact on teams. Subsequently, participants delve into crucial aspects of emotional intelligence and empathy, essential components for elevating people managers into leaders capable of inspiring and engaging their teams. The day concludes with a focus on time and priority management, addressing critical skills that even seasoned leaders may find challenging.

Day 2: Leading Through Change

Equip yourself with essential tools to proactively drive organizational change while cultivating resilience and adaptability in the face of the unchangeable. This session navigates through critical topics, including organizational change and continuous improvement, providing insights into effective change management strategies. Explore the art of influencing and persuading, alongside building personal and team resilience, empowering them to navigate the complexities of change with confidence and effectiveness.

Day 3: Making Managerial Decisions

Shift your focus towards the strategic development of your teams, emphasizing talent acquisition, retention, and the nurturing of professional growth. Explore the concept of a learning culture and its pivotal role in enhancing team dynamics for improved business outcomes. End the session by gaining actionable insights to foster a dynamic and resilient team environment, diving into key topics like support mechanisms, future skills planning and achievement formulation.

Day 4: Leading a High Performing Team

Explore strategies for cultivating trust through the demonstration of ability, reliability, and consistency. The session will further guide you in adapting emotional responses during challenging situations, effectively managing and resolving conflicts within teams, and strategically setting aligned goals to foster the development of a high-performing team.

Day 5: Presentation Excellence

Refine your presentation skills through hands-on practice. This session will show you how to build clear, persuasive narratives, create visually impactful slides, and speak with clarity and confidence. Elevate your presence and influence by learning to lead conversations that inspire action.
