About Programme

Film to AI: A Filmmaking Masterclass with Prof. Sudesh Balan is an intensive three-day program that guides participants through the complete journey of filmmaking. This journey begins with the basics of photography and covers various aspects of filmmaking, including writing, visualising, cinematography, editing, sound, and AI. It presents filmmaking as one interconnected process, from a spark of an idea to the finished film on screen. AI is discussed not as a replacement for the filmmaker, but as a powerful new set of tools. Over the three days, participants will attend talks, live demonstrations, film screenings, and hands-on sessions, all of which will take place within the IIT Bombay campus.

Programme Content

Participants will learn about the essential tools and skills needed for filmmaking, including camera basics, lenses, exposure, and cinematography. The course will show how filmmakers turn concepts into impactful films. It will cover concept development, writing, visualisation, filming, voice, music, and emerging AI workflows. Additionally, the course will focus on how colour and sound, shape and refine a film in post-production. The course will trace the evolution from film to digital filmmaking. It will examine what it means to be a filmmaker today, when technology can generate images, sounds and stories. Participants will explore smartphones and Generative AI as contemporary filmmaking tools. Discussions will focus on using these tools creatively and effectively to enhance storytelling in a budget-friendly manner.

Programme Benefits

HANDS ON FACILITY:
The course will utilise the facilities at IIT Bombay and the IDC School of Design, including screening room and computer lab. Participants will watch films, filmmaking demonstrations and learn about contemporary digital tools. Those interested in experimenting with AI prompting may subscribe to AI models for their own use during the course. The hands-on activities will help participants not only understand the technology but also consider how to use it in their creative projects.
