About Programme

Digital Twins are increasingly being explored in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) sector as a means of integrating physical assets and processes with their digital representations to support improved monitoring, coordination and decision-making. However, effective implementation of Digital Twins requires more than the adoption of individual technologies. It requires a clear understanding of the information needed for decision-making, appropriate data structures and workflows, and interoperable digital ecosystems that allow information to be exchanged across different platforms, stakeholders and stages of the asset lifecycle. This one-day course, titled “Foundation for Digital Twins in Construction,” aims to introduce participants to the fundamental concepts, principles and components required for developing Digital Twins for construction and infrastructure monitoring. The workshop brings together complementary perspectives covering the establishment of Digital Twin information and data requirements, lessons from Digital Twin applications in construction and AEC production control, and the role of data spaces, data hubs and federated data ecosystems in enabling scalable and interoperable Digital Twins. The course combines expert talks with a guided learning activity in which participants will translate the concepts discussed during the sessions into a practical "Digital Twin implementation roadmap" for a selected use case. Through this exercise, participants will identify the intended purpose of the Digital Twin, formulate relevant information requirements and data needs, consider the required digital ecosystem, and present a structured pathway towards implementation. By combining conceptual understanding, practical examples and collaborative roadmap development, the workshop seeks to provide participants with a structured foundation for approaching Digital Twin development in construction and infrastructure applications.

Programme Content

This one-day course will introduce participants to the foundational concepts, information requirements, and data ecosystems required for developing Digital Twins for construction and infrastructure applications. The course will combine expert lectures, case-based discussions, and a guided learning activity. The broad course outline includes: * Fundamentals of Digital Twins: concepts, principles, components, and applications in construction and infrastructure monitoring. * Understanding the role of Digital Twins in supporting monitoring, control, and informed decision-making. * Identification and formulation of information and data requirements for Digital Twin development and operation. * Approaches for structuring data requirements based on intended Digital Twin use cases and decision needs. * Digital Twins for construction and AEC production control, with learnings from relevant projects and applications. * Data spaces, data hubs, and federated data ecosystems for enabling interoperable and scalable Digital Twins. * Introduction to Digital Twin implementation roadmaps. * Guided learning activity for developing a Digital Twin roadmap for a selected construction or infrastructure use case. * Integration of information requirements, data needs, and ecosystem considerations within the proposed roadmap. * Group presentations, discussion, and reflection on practical pathways for Digital Twin implementation. The course is designed to provide participants with both a conceptual foundation and a structured approach for planning Digital Twin implementation in construction and infrastructure contexts.

Programme Benefits

HANDS ON FACILITY:
The course includes a guided, activity-based learning session in which participants will work in groups to develop a Digital Twin implementation roadmap for a selected construction or infrastructure use case. Participants will apply the concepts introduced during the lectures to: * define the purpose and intended outcomes of a Digital Twin; * identify relevant information and data requirements; * consider data sources, stakeholders, and information flows; * examine interoperability and ecosystem requirements; and * develop and present a structured Digital Twin implementation roadmap. The activity will be facilitated by the course instructors, followed by group presentations and discussion. The emphasis will be on practical application of the concepts covered during the course rather than on the use of any specific software platform or laboratory facility.
