About Programme

India has a large semiconductor design ecosystem and making rapid strides to grow IC packaging with 3 major approvals (Micron, Tata, and CG Group) reaching about few billion USD. A 10x higher investment (~10 Billions USD) is the IC manufacturing growth with the Tata’s proposal approved for 28-130nm nodes. These new and growing ecosystems will require the semiconductor talent growth as well as new opportunities. The talent needs to be familiarized with advanced transistor technology, manufacturing and operations. We present introductory course to familiarize the participants with the 28nm CMOS technology- a very powerful technology node. It captures a large market share. The 28nm CMOS technology is widely used in analog, mixed signal (AMS) IC design, microcontroller and other digital ICs. The Tata Fab projects the 28nm node as its most advanced offering that is planned. The education ecosystem does not have a very strong hands-on lab capacity at various smaller universities. The course enables lectures coupled with on-line simulation lab access to enable learning-by-doing. The course was first offered in 2024, attracting 120+ industry participants (160 participants in total, including faculty and students), with strong encouragement from MeitY and inauguration by the MeitY Secretary. The course was offered for the second time in 2025 and was well received by students, faculty members, industry professionals, and startup professionals. Participants demonstrating strong performance in the course may have opportunities to explore internships and other engagement opportunities with SemiX-IIT Bombay and semiconductor companies associated with SemiX.

Programme Content

Course Outline: In this course, we will travel an arc from basic CMOS transistor operation and process technology for transistor fabrication to 28nm CMOS technology operation and process manufacturing. The course will present the following topics in a learning style where the lectures are interspersed with hands-on sessions with Sentaurus TCAD software to perform lab sessions to explore and understand the concepts. - Basics of transistor operation - Basics of transistor fabrication technology for manufacturing - unit processes & process integration - 28nm CMOS transistor fabrication and operation The 28nm technology boasts of various advanced high performance enablers like - source drain epitaxial stressors for enhanced mobility - high-k dielectric & metal gate gate stacks They impact performance in terms of drive current and off current of the transistor. The course consists of 25% lectures, 50% hands on exercise on Synopsys Sentaurus TCAD, 15% evaluation of concepts and 10% hackathon to develop creative solutions of problems.

Programme Benefits

HANDS ON FACILITY:
HANDS ON FACILITY: The course will run off the Synopsys cloud for access to Sentaurus TCAD for hands-on sessions to explore the concepts through exercises and learning-by-doing. The course will also have a hackathon to enable participants to apply the concepts learnt to develop creative solutions to technology relevant problems.
